Course Overview
CBRN Theory and Operational Course for First Responders – CBRN Academy UK has designed this 12-day course for participants to support them to deal with critical CBRN incidents and events.
We provide information, knowledge, and practical skills to enable participants to respond to CBRN incidents to build the participants’ competencies and capabilities during the course.
This course covers critical areas of the 1st response such as Command & Control, Recognition of CBRN incidents, CBRN decontamination, CBRN PPE & RPE requirements together with CBRN detection equipment. Upon completing this course, the participants will have an outstanding level of knowledge. If they are qualified trainers, they will have the material to further train participants to operational standards.
Course Objectives and outcomes.
By the end of the course, participants should understand the main characteristics and effects of CBRNe and HAZMAT events and the fundamental response to such events.
- Identify Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Events.
- Principles of first responders in CBRNe incidents and the history of CBRNe attacks.
- CBRNe response – Past, Present, and current challenges.
- Characteristics of CBRNe and HAZMAT attacks.
- Operations during CBRNe incident (Recon, Detection, Protection. Decontamination)
- Lessons learned from previous CBRNe incidents.
- International best practice – CBRNe response.
- Identify CBRN substances and how to respond to a CBRN incident.
- CBRN snatch rescue, decontamination methods and Personal protective equipment
- CBRN Command & Control, Incident command system.
- How to use detection equipment at a CBRN incident.
- CBRN Hot, Warm and Cold zones.
Course Outlines
The subject matter experts provide a comprehensive overview of the different approaches to managing CBRN incidents. We will focus on first responders’ roles, responsibilities, and competencies in such events, providing international best practices and responses to critical and emerging incidents. We introduce participants to the Civilian and Military reference frameworks and familiarise people with operational and tactical responses.

Or people who may be required to respond to such incidents in a secondary or supportive response role, e.g., Commanders, Decision-Makers, Trainers, Government or Public Sector and Voluntary Sector.
Course Certification
There will be a continual assessment of the participant’s progress throughout the course and several knowledge checks and formative assessments.
Your CBRN Academy instructor will issue a signed certificate of training completion to all successful participants at the end of the course. To qualify for the official Certificate, the student must attend and complete all assessments and score 80% or more.
Course Methodology
This course’s learning methodology will include presentations, group discussions, case studies and more tabletop & practical exercises.

Course Instructor

Alistair is an experienced trainer and practitioner in the field of CBRNe security and protection. He gained initial experience in his specialist field when working in the London Fire Brigade, working as a Leading firefighter. He served for approximately ten years building up a wealth of experience in all operational matters. Alistair joined the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), where he became a public order officer and a public order medic. He later qualified as a lead member of the Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team. Alistair served in many Policing teams where he specialised as a supervisor in the Metropolitan police CBRN unit. As a tactical commander, he dealt with a wide variety of high profile CBRN incidents, the most notable being the Salisbury attack incident.
