Course Overview
CBRNe Fundamentals and Operations for First Responders – This 10-days course has been designed for Emergency responders, Firefighters, Hazmat responders, and other government or civil personnel to get the best practical and hands-on experience on CBRN operations and incidents response.
CBRN Academy has designed this course to focus on the critical areas of CBRN 1st response such as Command & Control, Recognising a CBRN incident, CBRN decontamination, CBRN PPE & RPE requirements together with CBRN detection equipment. Upon completing this course, the participants will have an appropriate level of knowledge to respond to a CBRN incident.
Course Objectives and outcomes.

Day 1.
• Introductions
• Welfare & course guidance.
• Course aims, Objectives & Assessment process.
• Types of Chemical/Biological Agents (CB) and how they affect the body.
Day 2.
• Types of Radiological/Nuclear Materials and how they affect the human body.
• Toxic Industrial Chemicals and the similarities to CB Agents.
• How to recognise a CBRN incident & CBRN response
Day 3.
• What is the difference between a HAZMAT and a CBRN incident?
• CBRN dispersal methods & consequences of such an incident.
• Beta radiation effects on the body.
• Sarin effects on the body.
• Tabun effects on the body.
• Russian VX effects on the body.
• Mustard gas effects on the body.
Day 4.
• What PPE & RPE protection is available for use within a CBRN environment and protection characteristics.
• CBRN scene management.
• Command & Control at a CBRN incident.
Day 5.
• CBRN designation of scene footprint as Hot, Warm and Cold zones to ensure that all emergency service personnel and public members are safe.
• Snatch rescue at a CBRN incident.
• Forensic considerations at a CBRN incident.
• Establishing and maintaining CBRN scene cordons.

Day 6.
• How to set up a CBRN safe dressing and undress area.
• Properties & protection provided by standard Firefighter coveralls.
• Properties & protection provided by chemical protection suits.
• Properties & protection provided by Gas Tight suits.
• Properties & protection provided by Forensic paper suits.
• Properties & protection provided by CBRN respirators.
• Properties & protection provided by Self Contained Breathing Apparatus.
Day 7.
• Properties of Choking agents & PPE/RPE required.
• Properties of Blood agents & PPE/RPE required.
• Properties of Incapacitating agents & PPE/RPE required.
• Properties of Biological agents & PPE/RPE required.
• Properties of Toxin agents & PPE/RPE required.
• Properties of Radiological substances & PPE/RPE required.
Day 8.
• Introduction to human physiology and how heat affects the human body when conducting CBRN training.
• Using current Hazmat Detection monitoring Equipment at a CBRN incident.
• Interacting with different agencies during the CBRNe incident
• Radiation protection methods and materials.
Day 9
• Release of Mustard Gas with three unresponsive casualties.
• Release of Mustard Gas with a person present and unresponsive.
• Sodium Hydroxide attacks two responsive casualties with chemical burns.
• How to correctly carry out a snatch rescue.
• How to utilise detection equipment as part of the safe undressing procedure for chemical and radiological hazards.
• How to set up a safe undressing area.
Day 10
• CBRN Medical interventions.
• CBRN decontamination methods.
• CBRN PPE/RPE protection values and safe dressing.
• CBRN PPE/RPE Safe undressing.
• Radiological substance assessment.
• Corrosive substance attacks.
• CBRN Medical interventions.
• Chemical agent substance assessment.
• Trainer end of course feedback.
Intended recipients and min max numbers
This course is suitable for any Emergency First Responder, Government Agency or Civil Responder required to respond to a CBRN incident.
This course can be delivered at a basic intermediate or advanced level.
Course Certification
Your CBRN Academy instructor will issue a signed certificate of training completion to all successful participants at the end of the course. To qualify for the official Certificate, the student must attend and complete all assessments and score 80% or more.

Learning and development will be facilitated through practical sessions, scenarios, classroom lessons, case studies, videos, presentations, participant engagement and equipment familiarisation.

Course Instructor

Alistair is an experienced trainer and practitioner in the field of CBRNe security and protection. He gained initial experience in his specialist field when working in the London Fire Brigade, working as a Leading firefighter. He served for approximately ten years building up a wealth of experience in all operational matters. Alistair joined the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), where he became a public order officer and a public order medic. He later qualified as a lead member of the Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team. Alistair served in many Policing teams where he specialised as a supervisor in the Metropolitan police CBRN unit. As a tactical commander, he dealt with a wide variety of high profile CBRN incidents, the most notable being the Salisbury attack incident.
