Course Overview
Medium and High-Risk Rescue Confined Spaces five-day training course – CBRN Academy has designed this course to support Emergency Services and Military search trained personnel who may be required to enter and or search Medium or High-Risk Environments during Search/Rescue Operations. It will also be ideal for people who work within Chemical Facilities, Water and Energy Sectors. CBRN Academy trainers can expand particular modules to suit our client’s requirements (such as counter IED search, Body recovery) as required. A specialist venue with tunnels, restricted access, and a full range of confined Space equipment will be required for the practical exercises and assessments.
Course Objectives and outcomes.
The aim of this training is to train the students on how to work in Medium and High-Risk Confined Spaces. Upon completion of this workshop, the learner will be able to:
• Explain what is a confined space;
• Understand the health and safety implications of confined space working;
• Conduct atmospheric monitoring;
• Describe the various types of equipment required for working in confined spaces
• Conduct a safe entry and exit from a medium risk confined space under simulated emergency conditions;
• Conduct a safe entry and exit from a High risk confined space under simulated emergency conditions;
• Plan and execute a confined space rescue of a simulated casualty.

Module One:
- What is a confined space?
- Health & Safety and Legal Considerations.
- Documentation and Planning.
- Gases and Atmospheric Monitoring.
- Escape Breathing Apparatus.
Module Two:
- Use of Fall Arrest Equipment for vertical entries.
- Safety Harnesses.
- Emergency Planning.
- Practical Exercises: Medium Risk Confined Space.
Module Three:
- What is a ‘High Risk’ Confined Space?
- Complete Breathing Apparatus – Assemble, Check, Use.
- Planning for High-Risk Entry.
- Practical Exercises: High Risk Confined Space.
Module Four:
- Rescue Equipment.
- Rescue Planning.
- Rescue Practical Exercises.
Module Five:
- Written Assessment (75% Pass Mark).
- Assessed Practical Exercises.
Intended recipients and min max numbers
This course is designed for persons operating within designated Confined Spaces. All students should be physically fit and not suffer from claustrophobia.
Course Certification
A certificate of training completion will be issued to all successful participants by the end of the course, which your CBRN Academy instructor will sign. To qualify for the official Certificate, the student must attend and complete all assessments and score 80% or more.

Course Instructor

Steve is an experienced trainer and course designer, specialising in Policing, Health and Safety and CBRN. He is an ex-Police Officer from the UK with over 30 years of Policing experience, specialising in Counter-Terrorist search and CBRN. Steve has over 20 years of training delivery, working with students of all levels. He has worked in the UK and Internationally but has particular experience of working in the Middle East and the United States. He has a wealth of occupational experience, which he can relate to the courses he delivers. He has worked for long periods in the Middle East developing and delivering training courses with the assistance of local interpreters. He has extensive knowledge and experience within the CBRN and Hazmat field and trains people for working in high-risk environments using breathing apparatus. Steve also has experience of working in border controls for land, sea and air entry points and is a qualified Port Facility Security Officer (PFSO).
